In light of the ever increasing strain upon our water resources and to maximise the abstraction licenses they have in place, many golf clubs are investing in the construction of reservoirs. Many clubs have extraction licenses from boreholes and/or watercourses but in many cases they are not able to fully utilise the license as they do not have the storage capacity to do so. The Berkshire was a case in point, their borehole license allowed a daily extraction of 20 cubic metres from the beginning of April until the beginning of October. In addition, there is a small watercourse that runs adjacent to the site of the reservoir from which they are also permitted to extract but in order to comply with the license the club must maintain a minimum flow downstream stipulated by the environment agency.
